* PEPCO DG says power cuts won’t end for at least another three years
* Protests against power shutdowns held in Lahore, Khairpur, Murree, Quetta and Abbotabad
LAHORE: PEPCO Director General Muhammad Khalid announced on Saturday that load shedding will not end for at least another three years, while citizens continued countrywide protests against the prolonged power shutdowns, private TV channels reported.
Addressing a press conference, Khalid admitted that a number of places including the president, the prime minister and the governor houses did not experience power cuts, which piled more misery on the people by increasing the duration of power outages faced by the common man.
The power shortfall will improve to 2,000 MW by June-July with new power plants going online by that time, which would in turn, reduce the average duration of load shedding to 6 to 8 hours, he said.
Protests: Separately, citizens continued to protest against the 12-to-14-hour load shedding marathon across Pakistan. In Lahore, protesters blocked roads by setting tyres on fire, and chanted anti-government slogans. Demonstrations were also held in Khairpur Mirus, Murree, Quetta and Abbotabad, the channel added.
Separately in London, taking serious note of the prolonged load shedding in the country, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani instructed the Water and Power Ministry to take long and short term measures to immediately reduce load shedding. daily times monitor
