Pakistan’s campaign comes to unpleasant end

KARACHI: Pakistan’s campaign in the 11th Asian under-21 snooker championship came to an unpleasant end in Indore on Sunday when Asjad Iqbal was knocked out by Thailand’s Thanawat Thiraphongpaiboon 4-0 in the pre-quarter-final.

The Thai gave no room to former national champion Asjad and won the battle 57-15, 73-37, 69-62, 58-46 thus ending the dream of Pakistan’s lone survivor in the last 16.

Earlier, Asjad handed out a 3-0 defeat to Syria’s Sekar Razouk in the last league match to finish runner up in group F behind Thailand’s Yuttapop Pakpoj. He won the match 78-1, 81-17, 79-26.

Meanwhile, Asjad’s two other compatriots Mohammad Ahsan Jawaid and Mohammad Ishtiaq failed to progress in the knockout stage by losing their second respective match.

Jawaid went down 11-51, 45-70, 57-65 to Thailand’s Thanawat Thiraphongpaiboon in last group B match to finish with a win and two defeats.

Similarly, Ishtiaq was sent packing 3-2 by Iran’s Mohammad Lababi the scores being 48-66, 71-13, 1-64, 71-9, 48-38. The former also ended with a win and two defeats in group H.

Three players from Thailand, two from Iran and China apiece and one from the host country, progressed into the quarter-finals.
