NRO decision mostly implemented: Babar

ISLAMABAD: Rejecting allegations levelled by former Attorney General Anwar Mansur Khan, Federal Law and Justice Minister Babar Awan said many orders of Supreme Court with regard to the NRO have already been implemented.

The minister said he could not perform according to the wishes of anyone.

He said the president enjoys immunity under Article 248 of the Constitution and there was no change in his position in this regard.

He said neither he nor Sharifuddin Pirzada wanted to become attorney general.

He met Additional Attorney General K K Agha and deputy attorney generals during his visit to the Attorney General Office.

Later talking to newsmen, the law minister said the government was implementing the NRO decision. Many orders have already been implemented. However, about some matters relating to court orders, relevant parties have filed appeals that are yet to be decided.

He said the Law and Justice Ministry is fully aware of its responsibility and his visit to the Attorney General Office is part of this responsibility.

He said Pakistan is stronger today as compared to the period of dictatorship. Democratic forces are playing their role, he said. He said Supreme Court decision had nine points, many of which have been implemented.

Agencies add: He expressed the hope that the 18th Amendment would be passed by parliament unanimously.

The minister declined to respond to the allegations of non-cooperation with the attorney general.

Awan said that his position was clear before the government and parliament, and everything was being done professionally and that he had performed the duties that had been assigned to him.

Babar Awan noted that it was unprecedented that the president agreed to surrender his powers to parliament.

He said the PPP government in its period of two years has achieved consensus over the 18th constitutional amendment, National Finance Commission Award and established writ of the state in terror hit regions of Pakistan.

“After 37 years parliament would exercise its powers which shows the maturity of the political leaders,” Babar Awan said.

Today’s Pakistan is more stable due to the successful economic policies of the government, he added.
