RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi district government and local transporters agreed on Monday to reduce transport fares after violent protests took place in the twin cities for two consecutive days. The transporters have now called off their strike.
The chief commissioner of Islamabad suspended the new fare list after violent clashes took place between protestors and police just outside of Islamabad.
Following the riots against hike in public transport fare and suspension of revised fare-chart, public transporters continued their wheel-jam strike for three consecutive days.
The transporters demanded a decrease in the petroleum products’ prices and issuance of revised fare chart to Rawalpindi Islamabad Transport Union.
Most of the public transport vehicles in Rawalpindi remained off the roads throughout Sunday.
According to the agreement reached today, the transporters called off their strike and have agreed to reduce the transport fares by Rs 2 - Rs 3. The original demand of the protestors was a fare reduction of Rs 7.
