KOLKATA: Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni usurped what could have been Shane Bond’s moment, scoring 66 off just 33 balls against the Kolkata Knight Riders to bail his team out of trouble at the Eden Gardens on Tuesday night.
Dhoni’s cameo enabled Chennai to post a challenging 164 for three batting first, and the rearguard, as it turned out, was enough for CSK to notch up their first victory in IPL-3, a handsome 55-run win as KKR collapsed for a paltry 109 in reply.
Chennai’s bowlers had KKR all at sea, with only Wriddhiman Saha (22 off 13) and Laxmi Ratan Shukla (19 off 16) putting up a modicum of resistance.
Balaji was economical and picked up two wickets but the surprise pick among the bowlers was Justin Kemp, who dismissed KKR skipper Sourav Ganguly, the in-form Angelo Mathews and Rohan Gavaskar.
Albie Morkel picked up the all-important wicket of Brad Hodge in the first over and things went steadily downhill for KKR thereafter.
