PPP ministers, lawmakers’ nominees get 2,000 tractors

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has distributed 2,000 subsidised tractors under the Benazir Tractor Scheme to persons nominated by the PPP ministers and parliamentarians, official sources told The News.

The balloting was doctored in such a manner that only the nominated persons of ministers, parliamentarians, local bodiesí nazims and office bearers of the ruling party received the subsidised tractors, officials revealed to The News on Tuesday.

The Benazir Tractor Scheme was meant to distribute tractors among applicants through random computer balloting. Under the scheme, the federal government provides Rs200,000 subsidy on each tractor, while the rest to be paid in easy installments by those benefiting from the scheme.

Federal Minister for Food & Agriculture, Nazar Mohammad Gondal, told The News that he did not commit any crime by giving subsidized tractors to the deserving.

“Yes, we awarded tractors to the people. They deserved it as they have voted for us.”

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture prepared a list of over 2,000 applicants recommended by PPP ministers and parliamentarians for this scheme — a copy of which is available with The News.

Secretary Food & Agriculture, Muhammad Ziaurrehman, said the ministry had nothing to do with this scheme. ìThe minister’s office, ministry of finance and Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited were directly overseeing the affairs,” he said.

He refused to give any other detail.

A top official of the Ministry of Food & Agriculture said on the condition of anonymity that minister’s office had a list of the beneficiaries of this scheme ready even before the balloting.

"Balloting for the scheme was a drama and it was only staged to befool the media and the participant of the balloting."
