PML-N, PPP win Gujrat, DI Khan by-polls




GUJRAT/DERA ISMAIL KHAN: PML-N candidate Imran Zafar emerged the winner against PML-Q’s Imran Masood in a neck-to-neck battle in PP-111 by-polls in Gujrat, according to the unofficial results on Wednesday.

Imran Zafar won by a narrow margin by getting 25,020 votes against his opponent Imran Masood, who secured 22,466 votes. Celebrations begain in Gujrat, where people chanted slogans against their rival party and distributed sweets. PML-Q leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has accused his rivals of carrying out rigging in the by-election.

In PF-65 by-polls, Samiullah Alizai of the PPP has gained adecisive lead against JUI-F’s Maulana Lutfullah in another close contest. Out of total 77, unofficial results of 72 polling stations are already out, according to which Alizai has obtained a decisive majority.

The seat had fallen vacant after the death of PPP’s Latifullah Alizai. According to the unofficial results, Alizai secured 23,378 votes while JUI-F candidate, the brother of JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Maulana Lutfur Rehman bagged 19,675 votes. There were total 77 polling stations in the district. Samiullah is the nephew and son-in-law of the deceased MPA Latifullah.

The PPP had nominated 27-year-old Samiullah Alizai, nephew of late Latifullah Alizai and son of former PPP MPA Hafizullah Alizai for PF-65, largely comprising the Seraiki-speaking rural population of DI Khan district.

PML-Q senior leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has alleged that the bankrupt chief minister of the province had managed attacks on the polling stations of their majority areas with the help of administration.

He said his candidate had got victory against the PML-N and the PPP-backed candidate but PML-N workers had burnt the election record of a number of polling stations. He alleged that the PML-N government had broken all previous records of rigging and vandalism in Gujrat by-polls and their workers with the help of administration had attacked polling booths and injured female polling staff and their agents to get desired results.

They shot fires, snatched ballot boxes from polling staff and burnt the results, he said while talking to media persons outside the office of a returning officer here on Wednesday. He said the PML-N had targeted 10 polling stations, where Imran Masud was having phenomenal lead. He said there were female polling stations from where they had not yet got the election results.

He alleged that the PML-N workers forcibly entered the female polling office, torn the clothes of females, snatched their belongings, including jewelry and burnt the polling result. He claimed that they even had tortured the policemen present outside the polling station.

He claimed that the DPO Gujrat had confessed that the PML-N workers had attacked the polling stations and even police officials had lodged a strong protest against it. He said the Election Commission staff had admitted massive rigging and vandalism from the PML-N.

PML-Q President Ch Shujaat Hussain has said they had conveyed to the Election Commission that they did not accept the rigged results of PP-111. PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif has congratulated PML-N candidate from PP-111 Gujrat Imran Zafar for winning the by-poll. Nawaz termed it a special blessing of Allah and said “we all must bow before Allah for this victory and honour”.

He said the result has proved that the people had supported them and had confidence in their policies. He also thanked the voters, supporters and people of Gujrat for making this victory possible.

In a message of felicitation to the people of Gujrat and party workers on success of Imran Zafar, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has also congratulated the people of Gujrat and said the masses have again given their verdict in favour of the PML-N.

Shahbaz said it is another achievement of the PML-N government that it has ensured fair elections despite hooliganism and lawlessness. He said success of the PML-N is the victory of democracy, justice and politics of principles and also reflects the sentiments of the people against the former dictator and his cronies.
