Talking to journalists after inaugurating Aiwan-i-Quaid at Fatima Jinnah Park, he said he had talked to the chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms, Mian Raza Rabbani, over the issue, and that it was for the committee to work out a course of action.
Asked if he would meet Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, as suggested by PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, Mr Gilani said: “This too is for the reforms committee to decide. The committee will decide whether or not I should meet anyone.”
In reply to a question on the joint sitting of parliament, he said: “The committee will decide on this issue as well. Whenever the committee will end its work a date will be given for the joint sitting.”
He said the president’s address to a joint session of the National Assembly and Senate was a constitutional requirement which would be fulfilled as planned.
The prime minister called upon the international community to facilitate resumption of Pakistan-India composite dialogue so that all outstanding core issues between the two countries, including that of Kashmir, could be resolved.
Asked about prospects for US mediation between the two countries, Mr Gilani said Pakistan did not favour trilateral talks. “However, we would like the two countries to resolve outstanding issues through bilateral talks, which the international forces can facilitate.”
In response to another query, the prime minister said his government was accountable to the National Assembly and not to the US.
Asked why the government did not take coalition partners and opposition parties into confidence over strategic dialogue with the US, Mr Gilani said: “This dialogue is an ongoing process which has only recently been upgraded to ministerial level.”
