CUTTAK: David Warner’s half-century and captain Dinesh Karthik’s fighting 46 were not enough as Delhi Daredevils threw away a winning position to go down by 10 runs to Deccan Chargers at the Barabati Stadium here on Sunday.
Delhi looked to be on course of their target but lost wickets at regular intervals for their third straight defeat in the tournament, while Deccan have now won three in a row.
Delhi opener David Warner blazed away in Delhi’s chase of 172, after Virender Sehwag perished early for three. Warner clubbed four fours and four sixes in his 33-ball 57, but the successive wickets of the left-hander and AB de Villiers pegged them back.
Skipper Dinesh Karthik lifted the side with a composed innings but kept losing partners from the other end. He fell of the penultimate over to Andrew Symonds and Deccan sealed victory as Delhi ended their innings on 161-9.
Symonds starred for the Chargers with both bat and ball, picking up three wickets for 21 runs from his four overs after scoring 35. Earlier, Handy contributions from the Deccan Chargers middle order powered them to a challenging 171-6.
Rohit Sharma scored 45, while Symonds and Herschelle Gibbs chipped in with 35 and 31 respectively but neither could carry on to guide their team to a bigger score after captain Adam Gilchrist won the toss and decided to bat.
Delhi captain Dinesh Karthik opened the bowling with spinner Amit Mishra, who struck immediately to remove opener Mohnish Mishra, but Gilchrist provided a a rapid start from the other end before his departure for 24.
Delhi spinners Amit Mishra, Sarabjit Ladda and Yogesh Nagar snared Deccan’s first three wickets on a two-paced pitch at the Barabati Stadium, before Rohit Sharma lifted his team to a promising total. Rohit hit three fours and three sixes in his 30-ball knock. Tirumalasetti Suman anchored his side with 29 not out.
Earlier on Saturday night, Jacques Kallis struck a fine unbeaten 66 as Royal Challengers Bangalore romped home to a convincing seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians.
Royal Challengers made 155 for three in 19.1 overs after their bowlers did a decent job by restricting Mumbai Indians to 151 for nine in 20 overs at the Brabourne Stadium.
For Royal Challengers it was their third consecutive win from four matches while Mumbai Indians suffered their first loss in three matches.
Chasing 152, Kallis and young Manish Pandey (40) gave the Royal Challengers a great start with their 85-run partnership for the fist wicket.
Earlier, fast bowler Vinay Kumar (3/25) struck thrice in an over, picking up the important wickets of Ambati Rayudu (3), Sachin Tendulkar (25) and Dwayne Bravo (1), to restrict Mumbai Indians to a modest total. South African fast bowler Dale Steyn also picked up three for 26.
